Reading the "isn't everything nice and rosy" interview with the new SPCA Executive Director Kristin Williams in today's paper almost made me choke. It is beyond hypocrisy. She is quoted as saying “We’re not your local pound. We are an organization that’s mandated to prevent cruelty and protect animals from neglect and abuse.” BULLS**T. Half a million bucks a year from HRM; seize-and-bill owner policies; AND conspiring with HRM on abusing Brindi (it IS abuse by any definition of the word!) totally erases any credibility they might have otherwise had. They cannot possibly fulfil their philosophical mandate while they are essentially “owned” by HRM by virtue of their fat annual subsidy.
Please let Brindi free! What is it going to take. It has been too long. People who commit crimes do not have a longer jail sentence as Brinda has. Bring her home to her owner. It is sad to see the state of the property where her owner lives, only to know the upkeep has been put on the back burner while she consistently has been fighting for the rights of her dog. Give this lady a Christmas! Give this dog a Christmas with her owner.
Kristin Williams was wrong: the SPCA IS our local pound, to the tune of $414,000 a year!!!
What is she talking about?
And protecting animals from neglect - HAH - Brindi has been neglected for a year and half and more - her pancreatitis is proof of that. Not enough exercise and a poor diet - fatty treats, and so on - it's no coincidence and it's shameful to blame it on Francesca! Then to have the nerve to use that as an excuse to cancel visits??
I wish people would stop blaming the SPCA they care about Brindi more than you know. Its HRM that doesnt care. The SPCA cannot stand up for whats happening to Brindi for fear that they will lose their contract and hundreds of animals will be out on the street. Brindi is loved and I wish people would understand that. They do not want to see her in the SPCA anymore than anyone that supports her.
The whole point is that the SPCA SHOULD stand up for Brindi - not just because they love her but because she is not a dangerous dog! Imagine if they had spoken up at the very start? Yes, they need the contract for the money, but isn't it blood money?? I think they should not be taking HRM's money in exchange for killing animals that are not dangerous. It's not right to agree to cage up and then kill one dog so that they can save others. Every dog deserves a good life. That goes against the whole purpose of the SPCA. Remember, the SPCA staff would be the ones holding the needle that will kill Brindi if Francesca loses in court. Don't forget, Brindi was already locked up in a shelter for two years before Francesca was kind enough to adopt her and give her a good home. The city overreacted by trying to kill her. All the more reason for the SPCA to go to bat for Brindi. Instead they accuse Francesca of death threats, blame her for Brindi getting sick, and make it hard for her to even visit her dog. That is not good for anybody, and it's hard to believe they love this dog when they do such things. Remember also the SPCA is the ONLY authority with power to protect animals. That authority and responsibility overrides any contract. It's a disgrace that they don't step up and help Brindi and Francesca. I heard they have been even trying to take Brindi away from her - which is so mean as heck because they would have gone ahead and killed Brindi right away if Francesca hadn't fought for her life. Not right, in my book, to try to "rehome" this dog - who might never get readopted, being older and having the taint of "dangerous" stamped on her. I also heard they wanted Francesca to pay $25 a day for all that time - that's totally wrong! It's a big mess and I hope that Francesca gets her back as soon as possible.
Brindi should go home before the SPCA losses the city contract, I'm told an old friend of Lori Scolaro and former shelter worker is getting the new contract. So there is more inside hate from animal control to kill this dog with or without the spca. They have made it easy for her friend to take over while stiffing the spca, who still want to work with HRM with "alternate" provisions!! Wait for it everyone......
My beloved companion and partner, over six years on death row and it's not over! In July 2008, Halifax dogcatchers seized my dog Brindi on an order to destroy her they issued without any warning - and without legal backing. Her crimes? Two reported scuffles with other dogs, and a third instance of getting loose accidentally, running to check out an approaching dog, which she never touched. She never bit a person or inflicted an injury to a dog that required medical attention. The city refused to reconsider, let alone negotiate; it rejected every alternative to killing Brindi, ignoring pleas from neighbors, trainer, vet, groomer, kennel owner, and hundreds of others - and no less than 5 positive behaviour assessments. A long, traumatic, destructive battle, with judges virtually washing their hands of her and sweeping aside all legal constraints on the city. In fact, they gave it more power - leaving her fate in the hands of the city that already decided to kill her! Halifax never deemed her dangerous - and the law does not even require dangerous dogs to be put down. HELP!
Vegetarian, non-smoker, architect/academic, sought a change of lifestyle on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. My plan was to renovate a heritage house, get it off the grid, and live quietly in peace and harmony with my dog and two cats.
Halifax had other plans. Will we recover?
PS I'm not really a mom to Brindi - I adopted her when she was a full-grown girl. When they seized her, it felt like they took my partner and best friend.

Note: Myth-blasters say the Animal Rescue Site is legitimate. However it doesn't devote 100% of its revenue to animals, as it claims; it is not a non-profit entity. But it does send a big share of its revenues to towards animal shelters and sanctuaries.

ReplyDeleteWhy is everyone so against letting a judge decide the fate of Brindi?

Come on, SPCA, you're not fooling anybody.
